One Defintion


  • Active learning is the process of engaging students as participants in their own learning (Harmin, 1994). It is a set of instructional strategies that draw learners into active involvement with the course content and keep them involved (Harmin, 1994).

  • Active learning supports the development of a knowledge-centered learning environment with its “emphasis on sense-making--on helping students become metacognitive” a higher order think skill recommended by the National Research Council (2000, p. 137).

  • Williams and Chinn (2009) describe how active learning strategies especially those that integrate technology tools are thought to be useful when teaching “ ‘net generation’ students who have different styles and expectation.
