Active learning is the process of engaging students as participants in their own learning (Harmin, 1994). It is a set of instructional strategies that draw learners into active involvement with the course content and keep them involved (Harmin, 1994).
Active learning supports the development of a knowledge-centered learning environment with its “emphasis on sense-making--on helping students become metacognitive” a higher order think skill recommended by the National Research Council (2000, p. 137).
Williams and Chinn (2009) describe how active learning strategies especially those that integrate technology tools are thought to be useful when teaching “ ‘net generation’ students who have different styles and expectation.
